Glass Sculpture, Chung Sukyung

Sukyung Chung, who studied design in Russia and pursued glass art at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in the UK, creates abstract sculptures inspired by the geometric structures of architecture and the natural world.

Utilizing a casting technique, the artist fuses colored glass blocks through heat. These blocks, each of varying sizes, are meticulously arranged in a mold before being placed into a kiln. Within the uncontrolled environment of the kiln, a slow and organic thermal forming process transforms the angular glass blocks into a material state that straddles solid and liquid.

Chung's intention is to capture the characteristics of 'order and randomness' and 'form and formlessness' within the boundary-blurring arrangement of colors. This results in an acceptance of 'natural beauty' that mirrors fractals found in nature—complex structures that exhibit repetitive patterns.

Ultimately, the thickness and transparency of the glass, coupled with the refraction of light, evoke an experience akin to peering beneath the surface of water, expressed in a manner that can be both serene and dynamic.

정수경 작가는 러시아에서 디자인을 수학한 후 영국왕립예술대학(RCA)에서 유리 조형의 길을 걸어오고 있으며, 건축의 기하학적 구조와 자연에서 영감을 얻어 추상 조각에 근접한 표현을 하고 있습니다.  작가는 캐스팅 방식을 통해 색유리 블록을 열로 붙여서 작업을 하는데, 각각의 다른 사이즈의 블록은 특정한 방식으로 몰드에 나열되어 가마 속으로 들어갑니다. 

통제가 닿지 않는 가마 속에서 길고 유기적으로 서서히 진행되는 열성형 과정을 통해 각이 진 유리 블록들은 고체와 액체의 중간적 물질성을 뛰게 됩니다. 작가의 의도는 색과 색 사이의 경계가 무너진 배열 속에서 '규칙과 우연성', '정형과 비정형'이라는 특성을 동시에 담아냅니다. 마치 자연에서 발견되는 프랙탈과 같이 복잡한 구조를 가지면서도 일정한 패턴을 반복하는 '자연스러운 아름다움'을 받아들이게 됩니다.  

마침내 유리의 두께감과 투명성이 선사하는 빛의 굴절은 우리가 수면 아래를 들여다보는 경험과 비교될 수 있으며, 그것이 때론 정적이며 때론 역동적으로 표현됩니다.
